Randolph Kids Nitrous Oxide

Easing dental anxiety with gentle & safe nitrous oxide.

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a type of light sedation that helps relax and soothe a child without putting them to sleep. Dental procedures can feel intimidating to children and while our board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Cory, has immense knowledge and training in easing kids fears, anxiety can still kick in. Nitrous oxide allows Dr. Cory to get children the dental treatment they need, while kids remain calm and pain-free. Being relaxed during dental procedures not only ensures their physical safety, but encourages a positive dental experience and better overall dental care.

When Is Nitrous Oxide Appropriate For Kids?

We typically recommend nitrous oxide for the following reasons:

  • Need multiple or prolonged dental treatments
  • Child feels anxious and fearful of dental procedures
  • Difficulty sitting still or taking direction
  • Bad gag reflux which makes it uncomfortable & challenging to complete treatment
  • Special health care needs
  • Want to schedule fewer appointments

Nitrous Oxide Procedure

Pediatric nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask that is placed over the child's nose. They will begin to feel the effects of it typically within a few minutes, and the calming, sedative effect should peak within 10 minutes. During this time, Dr. Cory will be able to converse with the child briefly if needed for instructions. Once the dental procedure is completed, the nitrous oxide is turned off and only oxygen is turned on, which helps to flush the nitrous oxide out of their system.

Is Laughing Gas Safe for Kids?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has deemed nitrous oxide safe for children. As with any patient, health history and an assessment from our Randolph pediatric dentist will determine if a child is a good candidate. Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that has been used in pediatric dentistry for years.

One of the many benefits of nitrous oxide is that it typically does not have any long lasting effects. Once awake, children are able to return to normal activities. There aren't long lasting effects but it can make some nauseous right after which is why we recommend only a light meal and no food two hours prior to the appointment. While very rare, if there were to be continuous vomiting, a fever, extreme pain - please reach out to our dentist right away.
